SETS,SERIES and SEQUENCE PHOTOGRAPHY

SETS, SERIES, SEQUENCE PHOTOGRAPHY:

FORM

SETS- It is a set of 6 black and white photographs (a set meaning collection of similar images of the same things or same type of thing). Of hands performing or posing gang signs in front of a scratched-up window or the window showing the window frame and handle. In the afternoon sun in the background giving gang signs a sense of life, liberty to speak for itself. T is for Town boys, E is for Enfield; C is for Chase boys, W is for Wash boys, I.V is for island village and L is for Lock boys these are some areas in the borough of En eld.

SERIES- This is a set of 6 black and white photographs (a collection of images that have a common element or theme but changing the context). Taken in the night. The photo consists of an arrow shaped road sign pointing towards the object and figures. Which are two different types of shoes opposing each other, a Crunchy Nut Cluster cereal box. A male figure sitting down on concrete with his knees up and hands around his knees with both feet pointing left. And for figure 2 is also a male doing the same thing as figure 1 but his feet is pointing towards the right, a bag and a Blackberry mobile phone.

SEQUENCES- This is made up of a set of 6 black and white photographs (a sequence is a set of closely related evolving events, a short narrative). I see steps of a male figure crossing the road in what looks like a zebra crossing. I also see road signs and streetlights, which is evident of the gure crossing the road at night.

CONTENT

SETS- The idea is to bring understanding of expression in the streets surround by newly created and developed gangs signs. Gang signs is like a badge of honor, it radiates a sense of being proud, bold of the achievement behind a gang sign. Makes it living, breathing badge. Just like when a warrior taste victory, they wave their flag and put their fists in the air, roaring. But it also comes with it bad side makes it a blood sport, a combat between rivals and silently speaking its weapon are it hands and words. Also leaving a symbol that every person shines in the hood they just don’t know it yet.

SERIES- The idea of this is remembering the good times, by taking his photo of an event a person has a night before. When you’re in a gathering of friends having a good time. (History). It’s the little things that make a big difference and we begin naturally to relive that moment for another day (awake). ‘History is a nightmare for which I’m trying to awake, James Joyce”. This quote by James Joyce supports what I’m trying to say and achieve.

SEQUENCES- The idea of this piece is when I walk alone in the streets of Enfield at night, where the light shines down on you like you’re the star of the show attached with freedom that comes with it, becoming a relief because there is no one to judge you, no one to insult and having the liberty to just be yourself.

PROCESS

The way I made this work is to make a simple exercise of framing, and then I made a brainstorm, did some research by collecting images from newspapers relating to the topic plus researched photographers Zena Holloway and Henri Cartier Bresson, researching these photographers lead me to look into other fields of photography which are street, underwater, nude, nature, war and cloudscape. Experimenting with the different times of day. So I went to take some photos of the morning, evening and night. Then went out to start my project and took lots of photos with different props. Afterwards I narrowed the pictures to the best 54, then narrowed the photography to the best 18, then change the pictures to black and white on Photoshop.

CONCLUSION

I really liked doing this piece. It allowed me to do things, my own way. And what I wanted to portray gave me the feeling of wanting to do my best in this project. Plus to show different side of life, the reality of what people go through and allowing me to do my own way gave a lot of joy.
