DRAWING BY DESIGN

FORM:

I see a portrait of 16 squares of drawings, also landscape drawings that consists 8 squares of drawings and 4 squares, showing the final drawings; of A4 paper individually. The drawings were created using a black fine line marker; the drawings in the frame have both positive and negative space, which is created by mark making. As you go along the sequence of stages in each drawing, I immediately saw changes through the guidance of different shapes, thickness of line and forms.

In the final four: The first rectangle you see a crop circle like pattern, giving an alien type theme. It also includes two alien look-a-like characters. The second one has a dominant tower that your eyes are drawn to first, followed by bird like structure with patterns inside the bird. Then oblong circles joined with bird heads going around the circle with big black circles in-between them, including various patterns in different sizes. The third rectangle has a thick line of a neck and body with the head out of the frame in a centered positioned. With peculiar looking alien eyes, which have been costumed drawn triangles with various patterns. The fourth one has a lot of pen lids crossing each other with triangles going over it and some coming out of the mushroom; joint with semi-circle lines at the top with various patterns.

CONTENT:

My task was to show improvements on each stage of the drawings. The fewer drawings meant you have to use bigger rectangles. Taking my time to show more detail as you go along. Also achieving a combination of elements, spending double the time and showing more care by improving the quality of line using the ruler. Introducing an opened space in the drawings, overlapping the foreground, mid-ground and background, adding change to the thickness of line by using different nibs.

PROCESS:

The way I made this work is I started of doing a brainstorm, re- searched surrealism and a surrealist artist called Akira Yoshizawa and used the 5 techniques which are enlarge, reduce, repeat, rotate and combine. I began with using my pen lid and a half cut mushroom that has been provide by my tutor. Then I took an A4 sheet of paper and folded it in halves until I got 16 rectangles, and drew my pen lid in the simplest form recording the detail to the simple shapes using the 5 techniques.

I did the same for the mushroom. Then I got A4 sheet of paper folded it into halves until I got 64 rectangles but this time I had to mix the drawings of the mushroom and the pen lid to make drawings that combined with one another to make a new set of drawings. Got a new sheet of A4 sheet of paper divided it until I got 16 rectangles and mixed the 3 set of drawings above and followed the same procedure and did the same thing for the 8 and then the nal 4 but the difference more time was spent on it to make the quality of drawing s better than the previous one.

CONCLUSION:

Doing this piece of art was incredibly frustrating. Because of finding ways to improve the drawing each time. On the other hand it was enjoyable at the same time. In a sense that you’re creating something from a weird combination that do go together. The end result is aesthetically pleasing masterpiece therefore making this project one of my favorites.
